Course Description: The purpose of this course is to educate students of core physics principles. These will prepare students for success in future science courses. Physics is the foundation of all other sciences and uses mathematics to describe reality.

Student Learning Objectives: All students’ performance expectations of this course are from the Next Generation Science Standards. Detailed descriptions are found at www.nextgenscience.org

Student Behavior Expectations: Students are expected to be ready for learning when they arrive to class. This means they should have a notebook, a pencil and a folder for assignments. Students should keep phones and all other distractions put away during class time.

Grading Policy: Grades will reflect a student’s understanding of the course content. If any student makes learning their priority then achieving a high score will naturally occur. Students scores are based on the two categories of assignments and assessments. Most assignments are automatically excused so they can only help a student’s grade after they are submitted. Students should choose to only complete the assignments they think will best prepare them for an upcoming assessment.

Assignments (0 – 33%): This portion of the score is based on lab reports, practice problems and notes. The assignments of each unit are designed to prepare students for the unit assessments so should finished before the assessments are taken. However, all late submissions will be accepted.

Assessments (67 – 100%): This portion of the score is based on quizzes and tests. These will determine whether students are learning the material presented in the course. If any student is unsatisfied with their score they may retake an assessment if missing assignments are finished.

Grading Scale: The grading scale is traditional and divided into two categories of performance:

Students with a grade in this range are not recommended to retake tests or resubmit assignments.

Late Work Policy: Assignments are designed to prepare students for assessments so they should be completed before the quiz or test. However, students can still learn from the assignment if it has not been completed before an assessment. Assignments will be graded within a week from the assigned date. If students want to earn credit for late work after it was initially graded they must come to class during office hours, lunch, or before/after school and watch as it is graded. Students can earn full credit for assignments after the due date as if they are willing to do this.

Assessment Retake Policy: Students who want to retake an assessment are required to first submit incomplete assignments from the unit. Students who fail a quiz will have the option of retaking it on the next test. Their new score on that section of the test will replace their quiz score regardless of their performance. Students who want to retake a test must come in on their own time to do so. Students who passed a test and want to raise their score only have to retake questions they missed and can come in during office hours or at lunch for the retake. Students who failed a test must do the retake after school and must retake the entire test. Students can earn full credit on all retakes.

Missed Work Policy: Students who have been excused from an absences will be given copies of the assignment and have the option of completing them. If the assignments are not completed it will not count against their grade but they will not be as prepared for the upcoming assessment. Students who are not excused from the absence must still complete the assignments in the same amount of time their peers had. It is a student’s responsibility to collect and submit missed work.

Citizenship Expectations:

Citizenship grading will be based on the Be A SHARK criteria

Assessment Calendar: Dates are subject to changes. If so, students will have an advanced notice.
